CCIA Industry Update

Ashley Scott, General Manager of CCIA will share industry updates. Please note:

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is responsible for the national Livestock Identification and Traceability Program, with the objective of providing accurate and up-to-date livestock identity, movement, and location information to mitigate the impact of disease outbreaks, food safety issues, and natural disasters. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency establishes regulations and provides full regulatory enforcement for animal identification as defined in the Health of Animals Regulations.

Canadian Cattle Identification Agency (CCIA) is an industry-initiated and led, not-for-profit organization incorporated to establish a national livestock identification program to support efficient trace back and containment of serious animal health and food safety concerns in the Canadian livestock industry. CCIA is the Responsible Administrator of the animal identification and traceability program for beef cattle, bison, sheep and pending a regulatory update, farmed cervids and goats.

A Responsible Administrator is someone responsible for delivering a traceability program defined by federal regulations. As a responsible administrator, CCIA’s main responsibilities are:

To maintain and manage the Canadian Livestock Tracking System Database (CLTS), which is secure and accessible for traceback.
Making approved tags available to producers, this includes assigning the unique identification numbers, testing, any recommendations to the Minister, quality and distribution, etc.
Communication with livestock producers explaining how to be compliant as a regulated party in relation to the CLTS.
To educate regulated parties on how to use the CLTS and where they can buy tags (canadaid.ca).

Beef Tech Breakfast, sponsored by Ag-West Bio

Beef Tech Breakfast with Jeremy Welter, APAS

Breakfast is served until 8 AM.

Beef Tech breakfast session until 10:15 AM.

The Beef Tech Breakfast is an opportunity to connect beef and forage producers with entrepreneurs developing technology to reduce labour, improve animal health, increase forage production, and monitor herds, among other common goals in our industry. While technology is growing in the crop sector, and livestock technology is developing outside Canada, our conditions are unique and necessitate additional developments that fit our weather conditions, terrain, and budgets. Newer innovators often also need the input of a number of producers to provide a product that can suit the needs of a variety of producers in Canada, and potentially the world. After a keynote presentation from Jeremy Welter, APAS, breakout groups gather at round tables to meet innovators who are looking for feedback, pilot testers, and even initial clients if their products are closer to general marketing. This event has been held during Agribition in the past four years, but is moving to the Saskatchewan Beef Industry Conference, giving companies and entrepreneurs more access to forward thinking and innovative producers across the province. Previous participants, such as Farm Simple, have used this event to connect to producers as well as livestock and forage specialists to further develop its products.
